How to build a heavy duty washing truck
The brief was to build a vehicle that would:
- Survive the drive from Brisbane to Lockhart River
- Have the capacity to wash high volumes of clothes and bedding
- Be built to last in the hot and wet conditions of Cape York
The truck is an Australian Army Land Rover Perentie 6×6 which was bought through an auction after being decommissioned by the ADF. It served in the army for over two decades before it was sold to Orange Sky for a very different purpose.
The truck took 6 months of hard yakka to build and was fitted with 2 x 15kg washing machines and 3 x 10kg driers. A diesel hot water system was installed by Orange sky to ensure that the wash would kill the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. An on-board 15 kva generator can run the washing machines and driers for a whole day.
The truck has on-board clean and grey water tanks that will support a number of washes with just one tank. LED lighting has been fitted throughout the vehicle to allow washing to be done morning, noon and night.
A custom built canopy was constructed to ensure the washing equipment would be protected and adequate shade from the steaming hot sun of North Queensland would be provided.
Orange Sky Australia purchased three pieces of art from Lockhart River artists to cover the truck’s canopy. Details of the paintings featured can be found below.
